About

Heroes. They sacrifice for us. They inspire us. And we honor them.

Flags For Our Heroes celebrates our heroes, living and deceased, in a touching tribute to the people who mean the most to us. Every Memorial Day weekend since 2014, a Field of Honor located at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, Maryland shimmers with more than 750 8-foot-high American flags fluttering in the gently warming Spring breezes. The flags are sponsored by corporations and individuals who want to honor their heroes. Each flag bears the name of the sponsor and the sponsor’s hero on a beautiful medallion. The medallions are then returned to be kept as mementos for the sponsors or their honorees.

The flags fly for a variety of heroes: The men and women who are serving or have served as members of the military. Police Officers. Firefighters. First Responders. Parents. Teachers. Coaches. Mentors. Community Leaders. They fly for all the people who have made a difference in our lives.

Rows of American flags flying in the Spring breeze outline the Field of Honor and transform it into a hallowed space to recognize the deceased and thank the living. For some visitors, it is a place of contemplation. For others, it is a place to run with their children through a sea of red, white and blue. For everyone, it becomes a place of reflection for the people have been the heroes in our lives.

Flags For Our Heroes was organized in 2014 by the Rotary Club of Montgomery Village and its 501(c)(3) charitable organization, the Montgomery Village Rotary Club Foundation, Inc., in conjunction with the generous assistance and sponsorship of the Mayor and City Council of Gaithersburg and the support of the City of Gaithersburg’s Recreation Department. In 2015, the Gaithersburg Rotary Club became a partner and together the two Rotary Clubs expanded the number of flags being flown from 500 to 750.
